Mývatn Nature Research Station
The Natural Science Institute of Iceland operates the Mývatn Nature Research Station, which is tasked with conducting research on the nature of Mývatn, the Laxá river, and their catchment area. The goal is to acquire scientific knowledge that supports the protection of the area in a broad sense. This involves surveying the region’s natural features and changes to them, studying causal relationships within the Mývatn and Laxá ecosystems, and examining the impact of human activities.
Some ongoing research projects are:
- Lake Mývatn ecosystem dynamics
- Cyanobacteria as risk factors and sources of nitrogen in Lake Mývatn
- Fish populations in and around Mývatn, their environment, population changes and genetic diversity
- Ecology of Lake Myvatn waterbirds
- Former landuse and environment in northeast Iceland
