Map viewers

In map viewers, it is possible to view and work with maps interactively through a browser. They display geographic information retrieved from a Geographic Information System (GIS) and are presented as map layers, for example with aerial photographs, property boundaries, road and parcel data, habitat maps, and geological maps.

In map viewers, areas can be zoomed into, panned across, places can be searched, and different map layers or overlays can be turned on and off as needed. Distances and areas can be measured, or information about selected areas examined. Clicking on a location can display various data.

The Iceland Map Viewer displays all map data published by public institutions in Iceland, allowing many different features to be viewed together. The Natural Science Institute of Iceland is responsible for operating, maintaining, and technically developing the Map Viewer.
