Geographical names
Geographical names are proper names for places and features in the landscape, such as farms, mountains, and rivers. They often reflect land use, natural conditions, and the history of the nation, and are an important part of cultural heritage. Recording and preserving them ensures that this valuable knowledge is not lost.
The Natural Science Institute of Iceland manages the database of Icelandic geographical names, is responsible for its updating, and maintains geographic information on geographical names from the database in consultation with the Árni Magnússon Institute for Icelandic Studies. The public shall be able to submit place names to the database, and access to it shall be free of charge. Geographical names are published in the Geographical name viewer, and the dataset forms part of the IS 50V base map.
