Volcanic activity

Following volcanic activity on the Reykjanes Peninsula in recent years, the Natural Science Institute’s Volcanic activity viewer has become an important platform for sharing information from various sources on the development of events at eruption sites. The map viewer displays the latest aerial photographs, elevation models, and maps, created from images taken by aircraft or drone, along with other data that shed light on lava flows, landscape changes, and the evolution of eruption sites.

Emergency responders, contractors, and scientists gain access to raw data within a few hours of measurement. For the public, the processed products are made available through the Volcanic activity viewer and Sketchfab, where 3D models of eruption sites and lava fields are published. This provides the public with better insight into geological processes that can have significant short-term impacts on both nature and society.
