Habitat types in Iceland

The first edition of the habitat types in Iceland was published in 2018. A total of 105 habitat types are described, of which 64 are terrestrial, 17 are freshwater, and 24 are coastal. They are presented in a map viewer. The classification of habitat types based on the EUNIS-classification, however, Iceland’s natural environment differs significantly from that of other European countries in terms of geology and biodiversity, making it impossible to directly adopt existing European classification systems. Many of the habitat types described have not been previously recorded and are unique to Iceland.
